What is EMDR Therapy
-
Evidence Based Treatment
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) first developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., in the late 1980’s has been thoroughly researched as an effective treatment for for a variety of challenges including trauma, anxiety, OCD, chronic pain, eating disorders, and addiction.
-
Method
EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation to access target memories associated with previous distressing experiences, which allows the brain to reprocess and cultivate a more adaptive response in the present. Bilateral stimulation is guided by the clinician through tones, tactile, and eye gaze. The method addresses past, present, and future. Unlike other forms of therapy, discussing trauma history in detail is not a requirement.
-
8 Phase Treatment Protocol
The 8 phase protocol includes a structured approach led by the clinician in collaboration with the client starting with history taking, stabilization and stress management techniques, assessing target memories, followed by reprocessing.
